Don’t be into trends. Don’t make fashion own you, but you decide what you are, what you want to express by the way you dress and the way you live.” Gianni Versace

Any Old Iron is a fashion line by designer Andrew Clancey, who draws his inspiration from vintage finds that tugs at his heart strings to creations from his own vivid imagination. Having spent 15 years as a stylist in New York, Andrew is on a mission to bring his rock star style to the masses with a dash of humor.

Justin Howard – Why fashion? What appeals to you about it?

Andrew Clancey – I like how we all can be different. There’s so many of us, and not being the same as everyone else has always appealed to me.

Justin Howard – How did you first get into making a fashion collection?

Andrew Clancey – I have worked as a stylist for over 15 years and I had the first UK branded boutique in the US situated in NYC. I got to be familiar with what I thought would sell in the states, and I saw there were pieces missing from the US market, and I came up with prices I thought would sale. When we moved the store to Nashville, where the laid back lifestyle there gave me the time to start putting together my own designs.

Justin Howard – How did you launch your brand into today’s world?

Andrew Clancey – I launched it at Nashville Fashion Week. I knew the organizers, as we had presented other designers for previous seasons. I just kept turning up at their events with my sequin jackets, and that finally seemed to do the trick!

Justin Howard – What’s your favorite piece? Why?

Andrew Clancey – The reverse sequin fabric is cool in the men’s jackets, the mermaid green one is my favorite. You get a 100 compliments every time you wear one, so what’s not to love about it?

Justin Howard – Are there any other areas of fashion you want or have plans to get into?

Andrew Clancey – I would like to make scarfs for giraffes. Seriously!

Justin Howard – What is your philosophy about the art of the wardrobe?

Andrew Clancey – Spend money on good shoes, a leather jacket, and make sure it has a sequin on it!

Justin Howard – How do you intend people to feel when wearing your pieces?

Andrew Clancey – #Dressikearockstar is one of my favorite hash tags. I’m very musically challenged, but through fashion I have been able to indulge in a rock’n’roll life style so far. I will probably end up in Palm Springs with a sequin turban – ‘A La Grey Gardens’ vibe when I retire.

Justin Howard – What is the message of “Any Old Iron” ?

Andrew Clancey – It’s just a bit of fun, a little tongue in cheek, and I recommend not to take yourself too serious. Don’t be a dickhead!

Justin Howard – Describe your first piece. What did it look like? What materials did you use? Is there a specific color scheme? How long did it take you to make it? What were your inspirations?

Andrew Clancey – My first creation was the sequin flip mermaid jacket. It took three days to make, and the fabric was the inspiration. I had never seen anything like it. I actually made the jacket in Vietnam, and found the fabric during a home stay in Yen Duc there.

We were in a locals house for three nights, experiencing local life and how much bootleg liquor Mr.San could feed us out of his ornamental dragon. The fabric became the focal piece of our stay with the locals writing obscenities (we think) in its weave.

Justin Howard – Now for what every fashionista dreads – have you ever personally had a wardrobe malfunction?

Andrew Clancey – There was one time in Nashville, when I lost my shoe and had to use a wine box as a replacement.

Justin Howard – If a celebrity could wear something you designed, who would it be and why?

Andrew Clancey – The Dali Lama in a sequin dress, just for the hell of it!
