The individuals, Diane & Theo, make up equal parts of the enigmatic art experience titled “MythoErotics.” Through the prism of their relationship, their joint love of mythology and the pure erotic nature of their daily existence, Diane and Theo have created a stunning visual narrative of that shared existence. Their art explores the very often conflicting human emotions of freedom and entrapment, quest and surrender, hunting and being hunted. By exploring the depths of Greek mythology, they reveal hidden truths about Love both on a personal and a universal level. What I adore about MythoErotics is the visual narrative that Diane and Theo have capture via their own relationship told by scenes from classic mythology. Of wounded souls being healed by the volatile yet transcendent power of Love, if they are only willing to surrender themselves to it.

Justin Howard for Black Chalk : How did the two of you meet?
Theo : Meetings are the best part you know. We met in a night club, right? In Paris, Diane is a great dancer. I told her “Let’s go for a walk.” She said “Absolutely not, what the fuck do you think I am going to do with you on the walk? I don’t want sex, I don’t want anything. I just broke up. You shit! Just leave me alone.” That was the beginning.
JTH : So she said no…
Theo : Of course.
Diane : He sensed I was really pissed off by many things. He was very soothing. We became friends for three or four months.
Theo : I did have my own issues.
Diane : He was also heart broken at that time. I was a bit self-destructive in a way. At one point he told me “I am working on this huge project in Lisbon. It is a great city, you should come see it. You can swim in the ocean, it will be great!” That is where we really got to know each other better. I mean biblically.
Theo : We should talk about our relationship, because it is an interesting one. We met and I don’t think either Diane or myself ever considered this thing would transform and take on many different forms. This allowed us to work together. This allowed us to fuck together.
Diane : To be in love together, to be supportive of each other no matter what. This kind of transformative and changing relationship, that always is evolving into something else. It is like we literally keep meeting each other…
Theo : The collaborative part of our relationship started when we started to draw together because we both love mythology and drawing. So instead of telling each other mythology, we started drawing it. We would send each other drawings, one would work on the drawing of the other. But in the beginning it was very ego-centered as we both have our own artistic style. We didn’t like this part of this experiment as much as when we started to transform drawing of the other.
Diane : Yes, we are one artist; that is how we like to introduce ourselves. We are both just half of the artist. It is a very weird process for an artist to surrender what you just did to another person, for that person to just do it again differently or just draw on top of it. So you just completely get rid of your ego. The process went very fast for us. In two weeks time we were used to sharing, mixing art.
Theo : After the first reaction from Diane and myself, when the other brings you back your drawing transformed and you have this moment where you no longer recognize yourself. You go “It can be even better now.” This process after the first two weeks of this gut reaction went very fluidly between us.
JTH : How did you both discover the other loved mythology?
Diane : I remember telling the tale because Theo is Greek, right? He would end up telling me the stories of “Oh you know that island? That is where this myth took place.” He knew I was into mythology because my name is Diane, it is Roman name for the Greek goddess Artemis. She is the goddess of hunting, the forest, the moon and wild animals.
Theo : She really is all that…
JTH : How did you each first find mythology as an inspiration?
Diane : I am into mythology because they were the first stories I was introduced to as a child. My mom is passionate about ancient art history and mythology. She named us, my sister and I, after Goddesses. My grandfather was very into mythology, he used to tell me about all the constellations and then relate them with the myths. For me it was bed time stories. Every time I was in trouble, or when I felt a bit weak or bad, I would always rely on some mythological character to feel strong. To feel beautiful. So it became a real day-to -day inspiration. I don’t think of mythology as just pretty stories, I think of it as so kind of guidance. All those myths, they can function as parables. You can understand yourself and the world, if you dig into it. You can transform every myth, depending on how you are feeling. You can embody any character, whether it be a woman or a man.
JTH : Theo, how did you discover your love of mythology besides being Greek and growing up there?
Theo : Well, let’s say the way I perceive myths is more like etymology is for language. I see that myths are an understanding of the world, of nature, of humanity’s passions and weaknesses. When something happens to me, I read it through my knowledge of myth. I see as a way to understand things, to see them more clearly. To understand what can happen between people. Like a road map.
JTH : One of things I love about your art is the fact that you bring mythology to level that everyone can relate to it via pleasure or pain. Today we all see the Gods as being something remote and removed from our every day lives. But to the Ancients, they were bigger than life. Their passions and lusts were the very stuff of legends. They were everything we are, but just more. In your art I see this erotica, but it is the erotica of Love. At times it can be destructive, but it can also be creative as well. Why the erotica?
Theo : We see the world as a huge copulation between elements, passions, bodies, flesh, death and life. This world which has no beginning and no end, which is basically asses and mouthes as it takes and gives. We really wanted to celebrate it. Because when we met and even in this moment now, it has to do a lot with the death of people around us. We want to celebrate our presence and share our presence with the world. This is why the elements are so present and that is why there are lots of dicks and pussy.
Diane : It is a big festival. It is every thing that is good in the world.
JTH : What pieces are your favorites? Each of you pick one.
Diane : Pick just one? That would be difficult as I have very personal reasons to love different ones. I really love the minotaur piece. It is the first one to be born out of this process. I remember the moment it was created in a stable at night. It was magical.
JTH : Tell me about it.
Diane : We were a friend’s house, on a Greek Island that was so magical. We just had an outdoor dinner, there was this dramatic moment under the Moon that I just saw Theo. You know he has a very classic Greek profile. He was just so into the drawing of the Minotaur. I remember that moment. It was like experiencing a Caravaggio painting, you see. It was beautiful.
Theo : For me, my favorite is the couple in the woods that are wounded with the arrows. It is the one that I drew the couple, and then we worked with the dogs of Diane and the hunt. This couple, they are wounded but they are so tender to each other. It is less sexual, as there are no dicks.
Diane : It is not sexual. They are innocent like children
Theo : They are wounded. They are in these clothes that are lion and tiger skins. The dogs are hunting them. The dogs arrive at the wounded couple, but they are so touched by the love of this couple that is emanating from them that they just sit down and give up their wildness before this nest of love.
Diane : You made this one for me.
Theo : Yes, I made this for Diane because she is always smiling but she has been deeply wounded. I wanted to express her pure tenderness that I have experienced.
JTH : This is seems very much like an homage to both of you. You are both wounded souls who have healed in each other’s love.
Theo : With each other, we have found love. When you grow up, you believe in Love and it isn’t always easy to believe in that. I think this is what makes us both understand each other. We both know that Love is around and within us.
Diane : It circulates. It is like air or water. It is the fifth element.
Theo : We have to let it circulate.
Diane : Now it sounds cheesy, but we would have those discussions about when you stop loving someone where does it go? It is something that you are feeling, then it evaporates. For us, it is like matter. It isn’t something that doesn’t exist. It isn’t just brain chemistry, it is a real thing.
Theo : If you can let it flow within and above you, then it really never disappears.
JTH : Very powerful. It is the ecosystem of Love.
Theo : I love this sentence “The ecosystem of Love.”
Diane : The way you describe nature as this force that can try again and again. It doesn’t do economy. It is about proficiency.
Theo : Nature is all about give as doesn’t hold back. It tries hundreds of millions of different things. We are very economic and restrained with what we give because we are limited. This profusion of nature is a disaster for humans because we don’t believe we have all this to give except with Love.
Diane : That is what we are trying to do. We are trying not to be limited, we are trying not to count. We are trying to be profuse.
Theo : It is a secret we don’t have to say these things. Love is just like that, it gives back a lot. It works, but we don’t just do it because it works.
